Addiction occurs when the individual has strong cravings for the drug, increased psychological and physical tolerance for the drug, and the onset of withdrawal symptoms in absence of the drug. Many addictive substances are resistant to quitting due to induced feelings of euphoria. Somewhat similarly, opiod addiction can be difficult to cease because artificial opiod bear chemical resemblance to naturally-occurring endorphins. Many drugs of addiction cause long term changes in structure or neurotransmitter release. Common drugs of addiction include benzodiazepines, barbituates, opiods, alcohol, nicotine, and other substances.

Physical withdrawal symptoms are present when a drug to which the individual has developed a chemical dependence is discontinued. Symptoms can last anywhere from days to weeks and vary depending on the nature of the drug use. For some types of dependence, drug intervention may be used to make the unpleasantness of the withdrawal less agonizing. Anxiolytics are used in some instances. For opiate dependence, drugs such as methadone may be used as a surrogate drug. The drug and psychotherapy methods used to treat dependency is largely dependent on the theoretical background of the medical team providing treatment.

Psychological withdrawal effects can occur due to behavioral and thought patterns that occur throughout drug use. Cessation of the drug interferes with the developed patterns, which can lead to depression and anxiety.

Even after the initial withdrawal, physical and psychological stimuli can trigger relapse and extreme cravings. This can further lead to feelings of depression and alienation, so it is vital to avoid exposure to triggers.
