An addiction is not just a “bad habit” that is difficult to break. A person who is bound by an addiction has an unmanageable urge to keep behaving in a certain way even if they know it is not in their best interest. A dependency on a particular drug is or substance is considered an addiction. If the drug is absent there is an intense craving and withdrawal symptoms can occur.
There are many types of substances that are addictive by nature, such as caffeine or sugar. These types of foods can actually cause withdrawal symptoms if they are withheld. Once any substance to which one has an addiction is withheld, cravings may begin. It can take as long as years for some to fully recover and beat the intense cravings. And even then there is the chance of a relapse if they come in contact with the substance again. These urges get their strength through displaying various physical and emotional responses.
Withdrawals occur once an addictive substance is withheld and these may be physical, emotional or some of both. The individual may sweat, shake or deal with anger or various other emotions trying to break the addiction. |
