Vibration White Finger and Raynauds Disease
Vibration White Finger is a condition that is caused by working with vibrating machinery such as drills and chain saws. Recently British miners have been awarded compensation after they developed the condition. The condition is actually more common in women as they are nine times more likely to suffer from it than men.
You may wonder what Raynauds disease is; well it is caused by the restriction of blood supply to extremities such as fingers and toes. When a part of the body is infected it will turn white and look dead, then it will become inflamed and can be very painful or it might become numb and tingle.
When fingers get vibration white finger, they can sometimes go into spasm which is due to a intermittent lack of blood supply going to the fingers. Most cases of Vibration white finger are not very severe and an attack will only cause small amounts of discomfort. But it can lead to skin ulcers and gangrene.
Vibration white finger is only caused by using vibration machinery but some primary forms of Raynuads don’t even need a trigger like vibrating machinery. It can even be inherited from relatives but these conditions are usually mild.
Secondary Raynaud’s is much less common than primary and vibration white finger but is usually more severe and is linked to underlying diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
The disease can be triggered by extended exposure to the cold, but some people believe that stress, smoking and beta blockers may also cause the disease to form.
In the case of vibration white finger, symptoms include tingling and numbness that continue after the vibrating machinery has been turned off. Then the fingers become white and numb but the thumb isn’t usually affected.
In some extreme cases people have even lost their fingers, and this usually happens when people are working with vibrating machinery in the cold.
If you have ever been affected by vibration white finger, you should contact a solicitors or compensation company to see if you can claim compensation for your condition.
