What exactly is açaí anyway? It is a berry that grows on acai palms, a plant native to the Amazon region in nothern Brazil. For several years the fruit has been widely popular in Brazil, being used in a variety of drinks, juices and even ice cream.
Acai Berry
Since the 1930s and 1940s there have been studies done on the health benefits of açaí berry (often spelled as acai). But not until recently has the fruit been more heavily analyzed for it's nutritional/phytochemical properties. It has been lauded as one of the most nutritious foods in world. The nutritional value of the acai berry included a high amounts of protein, high in dietary fiber, high in heart healthy essential fatty acids, large amounts of cholesterol lowering plant sterols, loaded with vitamins/minerals and an abundance of several antioxidant phytochemicals found in the berry's anthocyanins (pigment).
Oprah Winfrey even quoted that "açaí was one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world. Acai is the high-energy berry of a special Amazon palm tree. Harvested in the rainforests of Brazil, acai tastes like a vibrant blend of berries and chocolate. Hidden within its royal purple pigment is the magic that makes its nature's perfect energy fruit. Acai is packed full of antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids."
Açaí can be found in most local health foods story or specialty health shops. Consumers can expect to pay anywhere from $30 to $60 upwards for this product. There are also several internet distributors offering the açaí supplement. Opa Health is now offering acai supplements on a trial basis (you pay seven bucks for shipping). The Acai berry has been gaining attention as a fruit rich in nutrients and anti-oxidants that can be a supportive supplement for anti-aging, fatigue recovery and diet.
Abios uses only 100% pure all natural berries and provides the supplement in a powder form including Acai freeze dried powder, beverage powder and other powder forms.
The berry, which can be found only along the banks of Amazon River, provides a surprising amount of nutritional value. It has three times more polyphenol compared to wine and 4.6 times more anthocyanin than blueberries, and a substance called cyanidin 3-rutinoside (C3R) that is found in the berry provides a greater anti-oxidant effect than carotenoid. Therefore, Acai berries are the most anti-oxidant rich plant of all natural plants.
Acai berries are also rich in potassium, iron and fiber and contain the same balance of aliphatic acids as olive oil.
However, acai berries have not been commercialized in the past because processing needs to be done within 24 hours after harvest to prevent oxidization, which causes all the nutrients to be lost.
Abios established a processing plant on site to freeze dry the berries and successfully produces a 100% pure powder with strict quality control. In the future, Abios intends to collaborate with companies abroad to provide the worldwide market with the acai raw material. The company also plans to commercialize acai in Japan beginning next year.
